Hi, my name is Giulia Soto. I was born in Huancayo, Peru but I was raised in Utah since I was 5 years old. I enjoy doin Peruvian folk dancing as well as playing volleyball and soccer. I'm also an alumni of the University of Utah and some of my involvements were being a part of (M.E..Ch.A) Movimiento Estudiantil de Chicano/a de Aztlan and (S.L.I.D.E) Student Leaders in Diversity Empowerment. I was also part of programs such a Business Scholar, Opportunity Scholar, Innovation Scholar, Diversity Scholar, Research Scholar and Mig_ Scholar. This is just the little bit about me!
Background: I have a double major in Business Administration and an Honours degree in Latin American Studies with a minor in Spanish from the University of Utah. Then, I graduated with a Masters of Science education degree in International Educational Development from the University of Pennsylvania. My career trajectory has involved working part-time throughout all my education. For 3 years I worked as a Mentor in Europe, then I worked as a Paralegal/ Community Educator at 'Friends of Farmworkers'. And now, my full-time position is being a Second-year Program Coordinator and Advisor at the Center for Ethnic Student Affairs.
I am passionate about creating more equitable opportunities for indigenous communities in Latin America; to get more educational opportunities because by having indigenous Quechua speaking parents, I understand the barriers they faced in pursuing higher education in Peru. And I can personally understand some of the struggles as my personal struggles throughout higher education in the United States. I have been able to do this work by conducting an internship with nonprofit organizations in Peru and Honduras, conducting research in this area through my Honours degree thesis and my Master's policy brief. I hope to continue this work through conducting more research in this area and perhaps doing more programming in Peru in the future!
